As the name suggests, an electric vehicle or EV runs completely on electricity. There’s no petrol or diesel powering the engine – in fact, there’s no engine at all. That’s because EVs run on an electric motor that you can charge at home, or at an electric car charging point.

EVs have far lower carbon emissions than traditional petrol and diesel engines, which means they’re better for the environment. And they can even be zero emission if they’re powered by 100% green electricity.

A plug-in hybrid vehicle, or PHEV, works by combining a traditional petrol or diesel engine with an electric motor. This means that PHEVs can be plugged in and charged from mains power, just like EVs – but they’ll need petrol or diesel to run for long distances.

PHEVs have lower carbon emissions than traditional combustion engines, but they’re not as green as EVs.

Yes, while electric cars are more expensive to buy than traditional cars, they can help you save money long term because you don’t have to pay:

  • Petrol costs. With an electric car, you don’t have to worry about the cost of petrol or diesel. The average cost of charging an electric car at home is just INR 3 / kWh of charge – and you can use the Electric commercial charging points for INR 6 – 10* / kWh. (* cost may vary station to station).
  • Road tax. Indian Government plan to exempt your EV from road tax, because EVs don’t give off any exhaust emissions.

EV CHARGING LEVELS

There are different levels to charge your vehicle Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 DC Fast Charging and Tesla Supercharging, which only charges a Tesla vehicle. All electric cars can charge on Level 1 and Level 2 options. However, some vehicles cannot charge at a Level 3 charger. Knowing your vehicle’s capabilities is therefore very important.

Level 1/Home Charging: Level 1 charging is simply plugging into a standard wall outlet. It uses a 120-volt charge. This is the slowest form of charging. It will typically charge your car at a rate of 3-6 Km per hour. This is most convenient for home charging as filling up your battery will take many hours.

Level 2 Charging: The most common and efficient charging option for your residence or workplace. Level 2 charging delivers a charge of either 220 or 240 volts with a rate of up to 40Km (Approx) per hour. Level 2 chargers can be found at retail, residential, work, E- Fill’s stations or you can have one installed in your home. The Level 2 can deliver a full charge throughout the course of the workday or full night’s sleep. However, if you don’t have time you can receive a minimal re-charge within an hour.

DC Fast/Level 3 Fast Charging: DC Fast charging is the most convenient way to charge for those electric vehicles with fast charging capability. If you would like to fast charge your EV up to 80% capacity in under 30 minutes, Level 3 Public DC Fast Charging is for you. It takes seconds to plug in, then allows you to shop, eat or relax for 30-60 minutes and return to your EV with nearly a full charge. Public level 3 DC Fast Charging is convenient, easy and fast!

Sure, you can spend hours charging your EV at home or at work, but the ability to charge your EV quickly, whenever and wherever you want is a convenience we all want at our disposal.

Ministry of Power directed that no separate licence will be needed for setting up EV charging stations

Novermber 2018

Individuals will be allowed to set up public EV charging stations without applying for licences.

Central government increased the outlay for the first phase of Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) scheme to INR 895 Cr.

Ministry of Power asaid that both Japanese and European standards for electric vehicle charging infrastructure will be adopted in India.

January 2019

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs directed that residential and commercial buildings are to allot about 20% of the parking space for EV charging infrastructure.
